Jan 25: Robbie Burns Day Poetry Recital

robbie burns“You’re invited!

Please join SFU Surrey and Vancouver’s Executive Directors, Steve Dooley and Laurie Anderson, Surrey’s Poet Laureate, Renee Saklikar, and the community as we celebrate the birthday of Scotland’s beloved poet, Robbie Burns.

If you’ve never heard the Bard of Ayrshire’s poetry, participated in a bagpipe procession or tasted haggis (or quite simply, you can’t get enough), this will be a real treat.

  • 11.30am: BagPipe & Haggis Procession. Led by the Executive Directors, the procession will start from the staircase at main entrance to Central City mall leading to the WestStone Group Grand Hall (campus mezzanine).
  • 12pm: Welcome Remarks, Haggis Address & Food Tasting
  • 12.30pm: Robbie Burns Poetry Recital.

Come join and listen to Surrey’s Poet Laureate as she reads Robbie Burn’s poetry. There will also be an opportunity to try your hand at Burns poetry, and a chance to win a prize! Also, during the week of January 22nd, be sure to check out the Robbie Burns literary works display at the Surrey campus’s Fraser Library.  To get into the spirit of the occasion, feel free to dress in traditional Scottish attire, or sport your favourite tartan colours!”

Date: Thursday, January 25th
Time: 11.30am – 1pm
Location: SFU Surrey (campus mezzanine)

Jan 25 – Celebrating Robert Burns in BC: Past and Present

robbie-burns-day

As important areas of settlement for Scots in Canada, Victoria and Vancouver have had a long tradition of celebrating Scotland’s National Bard, Robert Burns,” says McCullough. “However, how Burns has been celebrated has changed over time. We’ll explore the new ways in which we celebrate Scotland’s most famous poet and lyricist, within the context of B.C.’s multicultural history.”

A procession of the haggis will start in the Mezzanine at 11am, followed by the address and sampling. Then at 12 Noon, there is an open invitation to join Surrey Poet Laureate Renee Saklikar’s Burns poetry recital, also in the Mezzanine.”

  • Date: Wednesday, January 25th, 2017
  • Location: SFU Surrey campus
  • Time: 10am in Room 2995
